Some women find it hard to bring visibility to their achievements and success. Like they literally avoid taking credit for their accomplishments especially in front of senior leaders.
Why is that?
Women don’t want to be seen as a shameless self-promoter and feel that great work should speak for itself. The company will recognise and notice the great job they do.
That’s a very honourable way of thinking and it certainly serves organisations well. Reality is, a lot of women aren’t really promoting what they do and remain completely unseen. Men on the other hand shout out about all of their achievements, making sure absolutely everyone and everything is aware of their latest accomplishments.
If a promotion comes up – who do you think will be considered for the job? The woman that is doing an outstanding job but tells no one about it, or the guy that is doing an ok job but is telling everyone about it?
It’s sooo important that women learn how to take credit for their work and shout out about it! There is nothing wrong with it! Expecting others to spontaneously notice and reward our contributions is just never going to happen. And the consequence might be us feeling super unsatisfied in our job because we feel no one notices what a great job we do. Some women end up changing jobs all the time, thinking that this would fix the issue. But different company, same issue. No one is going to notice great achievements without us shouting out about it.
So my advice to you is to start getting super vocal about your work and achievements. Perhaps write a purpose statement, a clear and concise statement that you’re ready to deliver at any moment, when you bump into your manager over lunch the next time, you are ready to show up confidently and ready to shamelessly promote yourself.
